About me

Hello. I am Xavier, a software engineer and a photographer. What I love is the feeling that passes between people — it does not have to be words. A gesture, a glance: that is an exchange too. So in my spare time I photograph weddings. I think it is the day when that feeling comes out most of all. I love seeing everyone gathered on that one special day, happy to be together. Where Echo came from

Photographing weddings, I often meet families who have lost someone. You can feel it in the way they are with each other — how much that person is still missed. I kept thinking: if there were a way to leave words behind while you are still here, and have them arrive on time even after you are gone, perhaps that would be a kind of tenderness. And a way to leave a little less regret behind. The words that were never said. The things left unexplained when someone goes suddenly. You can prepare while you are well. You can also, when you know your time is short, leave your family something gentle.

Free to use

This service is free, because tenderness should not be measured with a price. This is something I am able to do, so I do it. Running it does cost money, though. If this ever ends

If one day I cannot keep this running, I will first look for someone willing to take it over, and hand the whole system across. If no one is found, then before the service closes: for those who have already gone, their letters go out over the course of one month, each with a note saying the service could not continue, no one took it over, and we are sorry to deliver it early. For those still here, every letter is returned to your own inbox, one by one. No letter simply disappears.
